Good Friday...

Good Friday. It kind of sounds like an oxymoron. What's so good about it? Well, we know the answer since we know how the story ends, but when that particular day came to pass it certainly seemed to be anything but a good Friday. At least not from their perspective.

Time and space are irrelevant to God. He created both and decides how and when the chips fall. But there are always questions regardless. Questions like, "Why then? Why not now? Why that way?" I bet the same questioned asked today were the same ones uttered two thousand years ago. People haven't changed that much throughout the centuries  And so why the cross? Why the thorns? Why the nails? Why that death?

I've heard a lot of why questions over my lifetime. I've asked my fair share, too. Wondering and pondering and looking for answers. And the truth is, whether on a global scale or a personal scale, we've all got our questions. Our lists of things we want to ask God. Things we want changed. A list compiled from our limited, human perspective. But when we look at the tragedies playing out before our eyes, it's hard not to ask. We want to understand. We want to know. Why would a good and loving God not stop this? Why would he allow it? Why did it have to be so tragic and gruesome and hard? Why all of the suffering? Why the pain? Why death? Why sorrow? But maybe the question we need to ask is not why did God allow it but why did the enemy cause it?

"The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But I have come that they may have life and have it to the full." - John 10:10

There it is. The game plan. It's no secret who's out to do what. No questioning who's on which side of the fence. One is for death and one is for life. One brings with him death, and one brings with him life. One died our death so that in him we may find true life.

And that's the good of Good Friday. That no matter how the thief decides to steal, kill, and destroy, because of Jesus' great sacrifice, through him we have the hope and promise of a full life. Both in this life and in the one to come.
