when our choice was a mistake...

We all have to make a choice at one point or another. Sure, sometimes the choice is made for you. But someone, somewhere, is making a choice, and whether or not it's you, your life is changed because of the decision.

It's hard to make your own choices sometimes, isn't it? I always find myself in this constant state of trying to decide between one thing or another. Some things are big, some things are seemingly insignificant. But when it comes to the choices given to another, I always feel that I can make the best decision for them. You know what I mean by this. I'm sure you do it, too. You see that someone is presented with choices, and you know exactly what they should do even when they, themselves, have no idea what to do. The contemplate and spend an unnecessary amount of time trying to decide, and you just want to shake them and say, "Make a good decision! Choose the best option! Do the right thing!" It makes no sense that they keep weighing their options when the decision is so clear to you.

But there's always this side of us, the fleshly part of us, that gives its opinions. It's the side that says, "Who cares if it's not the right thing to do. It feels right, doesn't it? Go with that. Run with the feeling that you have right now. Don't think about it. If something feels this right, how could it be wrong? It's really not that big of a deal, anyway." And we listen. We bend our ear towards that deceiving voice and we let our flesh do the talking. We choose to chase temporary pleasures, to take the easy way out, to satisfy our carnal desires because we've forgotten that we actually do have a choice. All of a sudden, it seems like that was the only thing we could do at the time. That was the only option available. Like we were backed into a corner and that was the one way out. But life is full of choices. Rare are the moments with only one choice. The truth is, sometimes we just choose wrong.

Joshua said, "Choose today whom you will serve... as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15) Choose. It is a choice. A daily choice. Sometimes a minute by minute choice. And when we get into those situations where we have our options, we must decide. We must choose. Who are we going to serve? Are we going to serve the Lord, or are we going to serve our flesh? Are we going to honor God with our decision, or are we going to dishonor his name? Choose today. Choose right now. Choose in the middle of difficult, of impossible, or really unfortunate circumstances whom you will serve. Because that's the dividing line right there. If you aren't going to choose the Lord, you will choose something else. And any other option will leave our hearts filled with sorrow, with regret, and with damage that is not easily undone.

But even on those days when we choose wrong, those moments when we don't get it right, He still gives us the option to choose Him. One bad decision doesn't disqualify us. One poor choice doesn't close the door forever. If we didn't choose Him yesterday, well, we can choose Him today. And we can wake up tomorrow and choose Him again. And each day, with each opportunity, we choose Him because we know that choosing Jesus means choosing life. It means abundance, it means peace, it means blessings, and it means joy. Choosing Jesus means you can't go wrong because He never fails.

"Who are those who fear the Lord? He will show them the path they should choose." - Psalm 25:12
