Be a hearer and a doer.. but talking is so much easier..

This has been a wild week. I don't feel like we've been able to catch a break since the holidays, and I feel like 2015 is zooming by. How is it that February will be over next week? It's getting harder and harder to keep up!

"Do not merely listen to the word... do what it says." (James 1:22) Beth Moore said it best by saying, "If you don't live it, you don't believe it." And that's what has been stuck in my head for weeks now. Be a hearer and a doer. Two things most humans generally struggle with. Listening and doing. Because, let's be honest, isn't it so much easier to just talk?

But the Word beckons us to listen. To open our ears and shut our mouths. To humble ourselves and let Him do the talking. Listen. Listen to what He says. But listening isn't enough. It's a start. The tip of the iceberg. Listen and do. Because what's the point of listening if we don't do anything with what we've heard?

The point of listening is to learn. To know. Knowledge is power, but if we never listen we never learn. If we turn our ear to wisdom, we find it. If we ask for it, we'll receive it. And that's really the only way we know what to do. Not that we need to be told or given more instruction, it's that we simply need to do what we've already heard.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1) And when we do what we've heard from the Word, from God, we become the Word to those around us. Reflections of our Savior. Because it's easy to say it, but it's not easy to do it. That's why He calls us out and challenges us. It's the doing that stands out. It's the doing that is noticed. It's the doing that separates the sheep from the goats. And when we do what we've heard, blessings are in store.

What is He asking you to do? What is the Word speaking to you? Do it. Do what it says, what He says. Maybe it's a call to repentance. Maybe a call to obedience. Maybe He's asking you to take a step into the unknown, to navigate unchartered territories. Maybe it's to surrender, to finally lay it down for good. To forgive, to let go, to trust, to persevere.

But maybe you don't know. Maybe you're not certain what exactly He's speaking to you because your ears are struggling to hear. Maybe you're waiting on a word. Well, He is the Word. The one with the answers. And as long as you'll tune your ear to Him, bend it to listen to what He has to say, you'll know exactly what to do. Then, do it.

"But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it." - James 1:25
