baby... well, babies...

It had been a long day and we were tired. We stood in the backyard, soaking up some early evening sun, and we debated whether or not we would expend what little energy we had at the gym. We quickly came to the decision that skipping one night wouldn't hurt. We'd make it up later... maybe.

Aaron's eyes scanned over the yard, noticing the yellow blades of grass that had slowly begun replacing the green ones, and his eyes stopped in the far corner. He said, "What's that?" I couldn't quite make out what he was pointing to, and so I shrugged it off. Probably a few leaves. After all, they've been falling one by one, slowly drying up as summer has made its exit. He moved closer to the spot and he said, "Come here! It's babies." Babies?! Baby what's? We bent down and we saw two tiny grey animals snugged together. I noticed one was moving, but the other was completely still. They were positioned on an ant bed and the little one, the still one, was no longer breathing. Maybe it was the ant bites, maybe it was simply an unfortunate circumstance. But the other one, the other tiny baby, was moving. Eyes closed, he was feeling his way around and getting no where. We began to worry. What should we do? I felt an incredible sense of responsibility for this little one. We knew if we left him, he'd soon find the same fate as the other. We knew he was helpless and unless we moved him, he wouldn't last. Unless we intervened, he would remain in his vulnerable state. And so we scooped him up, and we did the only thing we knew to do. We climbed in the car and we took that sweet, fragile baby bunny to the wildlife rescue so that maybe, just maybe, he'd have a fighting chance at life.

Thousands of bunnies are born every... well, probably day. You know what they say about rabbits. I'm sure it's true. Baby bunnies are born every single day, and at the end of the day, they are just rabbits. Nothing fancy. Little animals that serve a purpose, even though we may seem them as useless. Animals that were intentionally created and fashioned by the hand of God. If they didn't matter, they wouldn't exist. God doesn't waste His time on things that don't matter. On things that have no purpose.

"And God said, "Let the earth bring forth every kind of animal - livestock, small animals, and wildlife. And so it was. God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock and small animals, each able to reproduce more of its own kind. And God saw that it was good." - Genesis 1:24-25

God said, and so it was. And when God said, and when it was, it was seen as good. Because God creates good. Good in a world that so easily turns it into bad. Good that the world sees as a burden. As insignificant. As unimportant. Good that the world so easily destroys as if it didn't matter. Good that is quickly discounted, quickly overlooked, quickly dismissed because the world is too busy worrying about itself. About its schedule, its own plans, its perception, its image. Good that was given as a gift but was turned into an inconvenience because the only life we end up really valuing is our very own.

And so we have to fight for God's goodness. We have to see the good, the purpose, in the things created and fashioned by God's hand, and even if we might not be able to see it, we have to believe it. Believe that God wouldn't bother creating something that truly didn't matter. He wouldn't allow it to exist if there was no purpose, no meaning, in its being. And maybe that means we have to burden ourselves, inconvenience ourselves, for the gift of life. Maybe that means we have to quit thinking simply about our own plans, our own concerns, and see the value of the small things, the small ones, in this world. Maybe that means we stand up and we fight for their lives when they can't do so themselves because they deserve a chance at life just like the rest of us were given.

He is the Breath of Life, the Creator, and "In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind." (Job 12:10) And so we breathe in, we breath out, we thank Him for the gift of life. We remember that all things, all people, all bunnies, all of creation matter to Him. If it didn't, it wouldn't exist. Because without Him, we wouldn't have life.

"The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life." - Job 33:4
